Hydro Shield vs Trimflaps

Hydro Shield vs. trim tabs
Many boat owners consider trim tabs to improve planing and stability. But for a large number of leisure boats, there is also a simpler, more affordable and more practical solution: Hydro Shield. Here is a technical and honest comparison.
What do trim tabs do?
Trim tabs are mounted on the transom and angled down into the water flow. When activated, they can:
- Push water downward
- Lift the stern
- Lower the bow
- Adjust side-to-side balance
They provide good active control, but also create more drag when the tabs are angled downward.
What does Hydro Shield do?
Hydro Shield is mounted below the propeller on the engine’s skeg and works as a hydrodynamic wing that:
- Uses the propeller’s water flow
- Creates dynamic lift close to the drivetrain
- Helps the boat plane faster
- Stabilizes the stern during acceleration
- Reduces porpoising
- Protects the propeller and skeg

at cruising speed
from dinghies to leisure boats
Results vary depending on the boat, engine, propeller choice and load.

- You have a larger boat that needs active side adjustment
- Your boat requires continuous adjustment under changing loads
- Maximum side-to-side control matters more than simplicity
- You have a leisure boat or motorboat from 8 HP and up
- Your boat needs unnecessarily high RPM to get on plane
- You want quick and easy installation without holes in the hull
- You want both improved planing and propeller protection
Hydrodynamic difference – simply explained
Create lift by being angled down into the water behind the hull — active and adjustable while driving.
Creates lift by influencing the water flow directly below the propeller — passive, simple and close to the drivetrain.
Both solutions can create stern lift, but they do it in different ways.
Our honest assessment
Trim tabs provide maximum active control, but require a higher investment, more installation work and more maintenance.
Hydro Shield delivers a simple and cost-effective improvement in planing and stability, while also protecting the propeller. For a large number of leisure boats, this is an effective solution without the need to drill holes in the hull.
